Submission to ideas competition for AIA Arizona "This is Phoenix"
Remolino is the new focal point for activity and energy for the Legends Entertainment District, creating an outdoor, large-scale gathering place that rivals the nearby venues and architecture. Remolino not only provides a much-needed upgrade for the longest tenured franchise in the valley, the Phoenix Suns, but it also welcomes back it’s estranged hockey team, the Coyotes, to the downtown area in one all-inclusive state of the art facility. Rather than being simply an athletic facility or a park facility, it is a hybrid of the two – its whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Remolino’s innovation lies in the combination of the best of technology with the sustainability of a functioning natural system, harnessing the regenerative power of the sun, earth, and water to generate energy, filter water, and cleanse our spirits. People will marvel at the futuristic beauty of its structures and be inspired by the presence of BIG nature.
The true uniqueness of Remolino is the user experience. The Wetlands showcases plenty of patio space for fine dining adjacent to a riparian corridor to share a drink with a Willow Flycatcher. As you make your way upward you can see the Arroyo being put to work harvesting stormwater if you happen to come during a rain event or constantly processing the A/C condensate in the summertime. The Urban Bosque allows for some rest and relaxation either under a tree or grabbing refreshments on the upper patio. The Plateau provides flexible programmable space and is the last stop before heading to The Perch for the best view. Remolino is a vibrant nexus of cultural activity, education, imagination, and change, which will reconnect the area to the rest of the valley and become a showcase of urban vitality. Remolino will confirm Phoenix’s leadership in, and reverence for, nature and urban ecology.
